What Is Dental Cleaning?

Dental cleaning is a preventive procedure to keep oral infections like gum disease, tooth decay, and cavities away. It is a non-invasive dental procedure and is meant to completely get rid of plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth. The process includes dental scaling (which is not known to cause too much discomfort), brushing and flossing, and in some cases, even fluoride treatment.

When Would You Require Deep Cleaning?

Firstly, there’s a difference between deep cleaning and regular dental cleaning. Regular dental cleaning is meant to keep bacteria away and freshen your mouth by cleaning the surface of the teeth. However, deep cleaning goes a step further and goes underneath the gum line to clean your teeth to their roots. Thus, this process is a little more invasive.

However, you would not require a deep cleaning unless you have gum disease. When the plaque on your teeth has hardened to form tartar and it’s been left untreated, it infects the gums that loosen your teeth. The only cure is to go beneath the gum line and clean the gums from within. Thus, while regular dental cleaning is a preventive measure, deep cleaning is a curative procedure.

What To Expect

For a regular dental cleaning session, you can expect the following:
  • A physical exam

  • Thorough brushing and flossing

  • Dental scaling

  • Fluoride treatment

Whether you need additional steps or not, is up to the sole discretion of the dentist, depending on your oral health condition. In case you need deep cleaning, there will surely be some additional steps in the procedure, which may even include sedation if you need it.
