Dental Dentures

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic dental restoration devices that are used to replace missing teeth in both the jaws or in either of them. It is the most common type of dental restoration in old-age people. Typically, dentures are removable and are only supported inside the mouth by the surrounding tissues of the oral cavity.

When Do You Need Dentures?

You may need dentures if you have the following signs:
  • You have severe toothaches that won’t go away. This is a sign of tooth decay and if you’re experiencing such pain in numerous teeth, this may be a sign that you need to get them extracted. In such a scenario, getting dentures would often be the best option.

  • You have loose teeth. If you have loose teeth or if you notice your teeth shifting, it could be a sign that your jawbone is starting to recede and it’s almost time to get dentures. It could also be a sign of periodontal disease, in which case, you may need dentures sooner than you know.

  • Your gums are infected. How do you know if you have gum disease? Are your gums red or swollen? If you leave this untreated, your jawbone would start to recede, you’ll lose your teeth and require dentures.

  • You have difficulties chewing. This is a sign that your teeth have lost their strength and replacing them is imminent.

  • And of course, if you already have missing teeth, you should immediately consider getting dentures.

What’s The Procedure?

  • The dentist would first sedate you before teeth extraction.

  • The dentist would extract your teeth.

  • The dentist would take impressions of your oral cavity.

  • The dentist will send the impression to the laboratory to get the dentures prepared.

  • The dentist will fit the dentures once your gums have healed.
