What Is A Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal treatment is a sequence of treatments that aims to heal the root canal of a tooth when it is infected. Typically, it involves taking out the pulp of the tooth which is infected and filing away the infection from within the tooth. Unlike other dental procedures, a root canal treatment is done by an endodontist- a dentist who specializes in treating the pulp of a tooth.

When Do You Need Root Canal Treatment?

You would need a root canal treatment if you show the following signs:
  • Severe toothache that only worsens upon touch or pressure.

  • Sensitivity to hot and cold, and sweet food.

  • Tooth discoloration, besides possible darkening of the gums around the tooth.

  • Bad breath.

  • Swollen red gums.

  • Swollen lymph nodes.

  • Cracked, broken, and chipped tooth.

  • Bleeding gums.

  • Fever with a toothache.

  • A tooth decay that has been left untreated for too long.

What To Expect From A Root Canal Treatment?

  • Firstly, you’ll be given an anesthetic to help you relax throughout the dental procedure. Thus, the procedure will be painless.

  • Next comes the cleaning part. The endodontist will drill an access hole in the tooth down to the root and take the pulp away. Following that, small files will be inserted to take the infected parts out from within the tooth.

  • Finally, the hollow space will be filled up using a dental filling with an adhesive cement to seal the hollow region.

Note that by this point, your tooth will be dead and you’ll not feel any pain in that tooth ever again since the nerve tissues have been taken out. However, without the pulp, the tooth will soon start to become weak and to some extent, malnourished.

Prolonged exposure may cause the tooth to crack or even break. This is why you must get a dental crown to cover your tooth if you’ve undergone a root canal treatment.
