Dental implants are definitely an investment worth taking care of! So what are some things you can do to ensure their longevity? We have compiled a list of tips to help you keep your implants in the best condition possible. Dental implants can last a lifetime if properly cared for! No surprise here; your implants should be brushed and flossed just like your natural teeth. So if you didn’t have a good oral care routine prior to getting your implants, now is the time to step up your game!

Brushing

You will want to brush your teeth at least twice a day with a narrow-headed, soft-bristled toothbrush. It’s been proven that soft bristles are better at removing plaque from your teeth and gum line. A narrow head will help reach the crevices and curves of the implant. A powered soft bristle option is a great choice. While a regular brush will get the job done, a powered toothbrush will make your brushing easier and more fun!

Toothpaste

When choosing your toothpaste, choose something that is non-abrasive. A non-abrasive toothpaste will be safer for your implants and your enamel. It will still provide the thorough cleaning you need and will keep everything in tip-top shape.

Flossing

Flossing is an important part of any oral care routine. Ensure that you are still flossing at least two times per day. It is best to use unwaxed floss or implant-specific floss. Your dentist can give you a good idea of what to look for. Flossing properly with a “c shape” and hugging the teeth is the most efficient.

Oral Irrigation

Your dentist can recommend the best oral irrigation system for you. These are also sometimes called a Waterpik, dental jet, or water flosser. Oral irrigation helps remove stubborn debris and food particles from your teeth. It also aids in reducing harmful bacteria. Proper cleaning helps prevent periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can still occur with implants, so it’s important to take great care of both mouths.

Dental Visits

It’s imperative that you visit your dentist regularly. Every six months is recommended. During that visit, they will complete an exam, take x-rays if needed, and provide a thorough cleaning. Your dental team will be able to determine an issue that could be a cause for concern in regards to your implants or natural teeth.
